South Dakota's Best Bakery

South Dakota's Best Bakery

Drive past the fading motels and the grassland that goes on forever, and you will find bakeries here that do things differently. South Dakota’s best spots range from sourdough so gentle your stomach forgives you to a cake recreating an inspiration photo down to the last crumb.

You can grab a ham-and-cheese croissant that redefines flaky, or a breakfast burrito that makes you forget the pancakes you came for. The Sour alone justifies a detour, but so does a custom strawberry cake from Sugar Palace.

Pull up the full list and plan your route. Your car will smell like cinnamon for weeks.

Best ham and cheese croissant
Sourdough heaven for sensitive stomachs
Cinnamon rolls worth flight detours
Sweet and savory loaf varieties
Friendly staff, easy takeout

The Sour is the kind of place that makes you rethink what bread can do. I walked in expecting a quick stop and left with a bag full of things I didn't plan to buy. Their ham and cheese croissant is the best I've had anywhere in the state, flaky and rich without being greasy. And if your stomach usually rebels against sourdough, this is your miracle worker. The cinnamon rolls alone justify a flight detour, honestly. Staff are friendly, takeout is easy, and the sweet and savory loaf selection keeps things interesting. I'd move in if they'd let me.

Local favorite for fresh bread
Seasonal loaves and sweets
Great sourdough, sliced to order
Cinnamon bread like pull-apart buns
Perfect for French toast

Breadsmith on the west side is where the locals go when they want bread that actually tastes like someone cared. The sourdough is sliced to order, which sounds like a small thing until you realize how much better it eats. Their cinnamon bread is basically pull-apart buns disguised as a loaf, perfect for French toast on a lazy Sunday. Seasonal loaves and sweets rotate through, so there's always something new to try. It's not fancy, but it's dependable in the best way. I stopped in for one loaf and left with three. No regrets.

Great bread, rotating selection
Friendly staff at other locations
Two-for-nine deal confusion
Weekend picks often sell out

The other Breadsmith location keeps things simple: great bread, rotating selection, and a friendly crew that remembers your face. I had a little trouble with the two-for-nine deal, though. The sign said one thing, the register said another, and we both shrugged before figuring it out. Weekend picks often sell out by mid-morning, so get there early or prepare to be disappointed. It's a solid backup if the west side is too far, but don't expect the same level of polish. The bread itself is still excellent, which is really what matters.

Delicious fresh breakfast burrito
Oreo truffles worth trying
Cute shop, friendly stop

Michelle's Mad Batter is worth the short drive, and I mean that sincerely. The shop is cute, the staff are friendly, and the cookies and cakes are genuinely good. But the real surprise was the breakfast burrito. Fresh, warm, and stuffed with eggs and cheese, it hit the spot in a way I didn't anticipate. The Oreo truffles are worth trying too, rich and crumbly in all the right ways. It's a charming stop that feels more like a neighbor's kitchen than a business. I'll be back, probably for the burrito again.

Exact, down to the little details. It made the celebration feel special without any stress. If you need a cake that looks like a dream and tastes even better, this is your place. Just plan ahead, because they're worth waiting for.

Chef Schindler's Gourmet Desserts is a bit of a marvel. They delivered across state lines for a family birthday, and the service was stellar from start to finish. The pumpkin pecan pie cheesecake was the star of the table, creamy and spiced just right. The owner responded to my questions lightning-fast, kind and helpful the whole time. Recipients said those were the best cupcakes they'd ever had, which is high praise from a picky bunch. Family birthdays felt genuinely special because of this place. I'm already thinking about what to order next.

Staff are kind and attentive, and once when an item was missing from my order, the owner personally delivered it. That kind of service stays with you. The seasonal flavors keep bringing me back, which is probably the point. It's hard to leave with just one.

Gary's Bakery makes donuts from scratch daily, and you can taste the difference. Light, fresh, and gone by noon most days. But here's the thing: check your receipt carefully. I noticed a small overcharge once, and when I brought it up, they issued a cash refund promptly. No fuss. That said, the owner seems to avoid accountability issues, so don't expect much conversation about it. There's no online ordering, which is a pain, but the donuts are worth the trip in person. Just keep an eye on the numbers before you leave.

The Cake Lady can recreate just about any cake you show her, and she does it spot-on. The cake itself was delicious, and the crowd at the party approved wholeheartedly. But here's the thing: her service is charming yet scattered. The tasting menu varies daily, so what you try one visit might not be there the next. Order pickup lacks some organization, so be prepared to wait or double-check your time. It's worth the hassle for the final product, but don't expect a seamless process. Bring patience, and you'll leave with something great.
