Tallahassee's Best Bakery

Tallahassee's Best Bakery

I’ve eaten my way through enough Tallahassee bakeries to know that a craving here isn’t a simple fix. One day you need a flaky almond croissant from the sunny corner spot, the next only a scratch-made Italian cake in a church courtyard will do.

My list runs from Ground Ops’ memorable pastries to a downtown café with heavenly air conditioning, and I checked the bathrooms at a few of them, too. The only thing these places share is that they take flour and butter seriously.

Fair warning: you’ll be full before you finish reading. Here’s where to go when the mood strikes.

Worth the repeated visits
Outstanding pastries and coffee
Friendly, welcoming service
Great corner location
A new local favorite

I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve walked into Ground Ops Roastery + Bakehouse, and that’s exactly the point. This place earns repeat visits. The pastries are outstanding, flaky and buttery, and the coffee never misses. What really seals it, though, is the welcome. The staff remembers you, smiles at you, and makes you feel like a regular even on your first try. The corner location is bright and easy to find, and the whole vibe feels like a new local favorite that’s already settling into legend. Go for the almond croissant. Stay for everything else.

The Hawthorn Bistro & Bakery surprised me in the best way. I came for coffee and stayed for the farmers toast, which was piled high with fresh, vibrant toppings. The Italian sandwiches are legit, with crusty bread and rich fillings that transport you. But the grilled cheese and tomato soup combo? Pure comfort. Service was excellent throughout, attentive without hovering. And yes, I checked the bathroom, spotless and well-maintained, which says a lot about a place’s standards. The dessert case alone is worth a visit. This is a spot that knows how to do breakfast, lunch, and everything in between.

The Lively Café at St. John's is a downtown lunch escape that feels like a secret. The air conditioning is heavenly, a true respite from Florida heat. The deli-quality lunch portions are fresh and generous, perfect for a midday refuel. But the legend here is the scratch-made Italian cake. It’s rich, layered, and worth every calorie. I sat in the courtyard, surrounded by church architecture, and felt a sense of peace. Service was warm and efficient. This is a hidden gem in plain sight, a place that balances quick service with genuine quality. I’ll be back for that cake, no question.

Skip the overpriced drinks
Pastries arrive pre-made
Bland, uninspired breakfast bowls
Unfriendly service throughout
Not worth your money

I wanted to like RedEye Coffee Midtown, but it fell flat. The drinks are overpriced for what you get, and the pastries arrive pre-made, tasting like they’ve been sitting too long. The breakfast bowls were bland and uninspired, lacking any real flavor. Service was unfriendly, almost dismissive, which made the whole experience worse. I’m not sure why this location misses the mark when other RedEyes succeed. But honestly, it’s not worth your money. There are better options nearby. Skip this one and save your appetite for somewhere that cares. I left disappointed and a little hungry.

Goodies Eatery is a gem, and the service is epic. From the moment I walked in, they treated me like an old friend. The Cuban coffee is delicious, strong, and sweet, just the way it should be. But the superstar is the Asiago bagel sandwich, loaded with fresh ingredients and a savory, cheesy crunch. Even my pickiest friend cleaned their plate, which is high praise. The staff made excellent recommendations, and everything they suggested was spot on. This is a place that earns a return visit, and I’ll be back soon. Do yourself a favor and go hungry.
